The construction industry releases huge amounts of waste no matter the size of individual construction projects. The excessive wastes may be a result of general debris from construction, the building materials and others. They end up filling up landfills, and some may even pose a health risk to the community. Finding ways to manage this waste is paramount to help reduce costs and save the environment. If you are an upstart contractor or a DIY enthusiast involved in a home construction project, here are some expert tips to help you manage the large amount of waste produced.

Recycle and reuse

The many materials used in construction can easily be recycled. Metals and plastics that are a major part of construction can be reshaped or smelted for other uses. They are easily recycled by many while lumber and other wooden waste make up the majority of waste still heading to landfills. This is because recycled wood may be undesirable due to contamination, damage and other practical constraints. Find alternative uses without having to discard them in the first place. Lumber cut offs from the framing can be used as spacers. Also, used wooden crates can be repurposed as storage units for equipment then put away safely. You won't even have to purchase new crates next time.

Use standard measurements.

Structure your project to use building materials that come in standard dimensions. This will allow you to make fewer adjustments in order to make them suit your purposes. The less you have to cut or file away, the less you waste. This is especially true for wooden materials since it is hard finding a use for the cut pieces. Plan for the framing for your doors and windows to use standard wood lengths. Doing this has the added advantage of reducing the time and costs required for the entire process. It also makes it easier to reuse any materials you may have leftover.

Plan for efficient waste disposal beforehand.

Before you begin construction, plan for waste disposal. Locate the nearest recycling centre and work from there. Depending on distance and convenience, you may structure your construction schedule to accommodate waste disposal. For instance, plan to take your waste to a recycling centre while on the way to pick up new equipment. Also, provide more time in your schedule for waste management planning. You can also go out of your way to put in place a secure storage for equipment and materials. This will prevent damage and promote reuse.
