How to Efficiently Deploy an Underground Irrigation System

When a sizeable piece of land is being converted for leisure purposes, this may involve seeding the entire area with grass. The area can then be prepared for a variety of ball games as part of a community project, for example. Certainly, you'll want to ensure that you sew the right type of grass that can cope with Australia's harsh climate, but you will also need to consider drought conditions and sparse rainfall. In this case, you must install underground irrigation but this can be quite a challenging job in itself. How can you make this easier by utilising a particular approach?

Preparing for Problems

As you know, irrigation involves planting a network of pipes that criss-cross the entire area at given intervals. These pipes have to be installed a certain distance under the surface, but you may often have to deal with unexpected and unwanted obstacles. For example, do you know if there are any utility cables and conduits just below the ground? How extensive is the network of any mature trees around the plot? You can find out the hard way by employing an arduous and labour-intensive approach, or you can bring in the experts with appropriate equipment.

Using a Trencher

Certainly, you may be able to rent a machine known as a "trencher" that will create trenches using an open-cut method. However, this can cause considerable disruption and may not be ideal wherever multiple tree roots may be present. Other machines and approaches may be available but they also have their disadvantages.

Turning to a Horizontal Directional Drilling Machine

Instead, bring in a contractor with a horizontal directional drilling machine. This is a non-destructive approach that takes advantage of sophisticated technology instead. These boring machines will dig each hold methodically while avoiding any existing utility conduit or tree roots. Once the machine has drilled out each covered trench, the irrigation pipe can be pulled back through that hole.

Doing the Job Correctly

It's important to do this job properly at the outset if you want to avoid niggling problems and inconsistent water supply. After all, the pristine playing field may deteriorate quickly if not cared for correctly.

Working with the Experts

Remember, you want to avoid any damage as you carry out this work, and this may be difficult to achieve if you employ a hit-and-miss approach. Instead, it may be best to bring in a directional boring contractor with experience in this area.
